Ayodhya Ram Temple Embezzlement Scandal: Supreme Court to Decide on CBI Probe Amidst ₹3 Crore Fraud Discovery

The ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged financial fraud at the Ayodhya Ram Temple has sent shockwaves through the nation, turning a site of immense spiritual devotion into a focal point of a high-stakes criminal investigation. In the latest updates regarding this unfolding crisis, reports have surfaced detailing a massive embezzlement racket that has compromised the financial integrity of the temple's administration.

The Mechanics of the Fraud: A Breach of Trust

The investigation has revealed a sophisticated scheme through which former employees and contractual staff siphoned off an estimated ₹2–3 crore. The perpetrators allegedly exploited specific vulnerabilities in the temple's CCTV surveillance network, operating within blind spots to avoid detection. To lend an air of legitimacy to their crimes, the group utilized forged donation receipt books that bore the official logo of the Trust, successfully deceiving numerous devotees and misappropriating funds intended for sacred purposes.

SIT Crackdown and Major Arrests

Following the exposure of these irregularities, a state-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) was mobilized to lead a rigorous crackdown. The SIT has successfully arrested eight individuals linked to the scam. The fallout has been significant within the Trust's leadership; notably, a close aide to the former general secretary, Champat Rai, has been detained. This scandal has already triggered administrative shifts, including the resignation of Mr. Rai amidst intense public backlash and mounting scrutiny.

The SIT's investigation has also focused heavily on asset recovery to ensure the stolen funds are accounted for. Authorities have reported the following:

  • Frozen Accounts: Nearly 50 bank accounts associated with the suspects have been frozen.
  • Asset Seizures: Significant recoveries include luxury cars, large sums of cash, gold jewellery, and various investment documents believed to have been purchased with the embezzled money.

The Judicial Battle: Demand for CBI and CAG Oversight

As the investigation deepens, the matter has escalated to the Supreme Court of India. A judicial bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, is scheduled to hear a batch of Public Interest Litigations (PILs) that challenge the adequacy of the current state-level investigation. The petitioners are demanding a critical transition from the SIT to a court-monitored probe conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Furthermore, there is a growing call for a comprehensive forensic audit to be conducted by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). These legal demands aim to ensure absolute transparency and to implement the rigorous financial oversight necessary to restore the shattered public faith in the temple's administrative management. The upcoming Supreme Court hearing will be a landmark moment in determining the level of accountability required for major religious institutions in India.
